PGMA hands in farm inputs to Bohol irrigators' groups

by Rey Anthony Chiu

Tagbilaran City (12 October) -- OTHER than improved production caused by irrigated farmlands when the water of the Bayongan dam opened October 12, farmer beneficiaries from 16 irrigations associations of the Bohol Irrigation Project Phase II (BHIP II) got add-ons via a million worth of farm inputs.

The inputs are intended to raise even more agricultural productivity and income of farmer families in the irrigation facility's catch-ment thereby translating into improved living standards.

With the additional inputs, farmers' living conditions raise while at the same time these expand Bohol's chances of becoming the region's food basket as the new irrigation facility is expected to spur rural socio-economic conditions in the region, National Irrigation Administration (NIA) sources said.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo herself came to Bohol Friday to preside over the commissioning of the irrigation facility and handed in a certificate of dispersal for tilapia, which forms part of the P.7M kits from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

BHIP II project manager Engr. Modesto Membreve, in behalf of the farmer beneficiaries received the input certificate for Bayongan irrigation associations.

On the other hand, the president also handed out certificates of commitment from the Department of Agriculture.

The certificates include a training input on rice techno-demo and rice production.

Meanwhile, a rice seed subsidy for hybrid and certified seeds also come in as one of the inputs while the president also handed in at least flat bed mechanical dryers for use by the farmer irrigators' associations.

For the BHIP II's 17 irrigation associations, receiving the inputs and training certificates is their federated president Janiel Golosino Jr. of the Corazon, Bugang, Gabi Irrigators Association.

The ceremonial turn over of farm inputs form part of the simple rites in a program during the commissioning of the P3.6B irrigation facility in Bayongan San Miguel Bohol.

Also witnessing the turn-over were Presidential Management Staff Secretary Cerge Remonde, Department of Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano, Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Makoto Katsura, NIA Administrator Mar Tugaoen, Gov. Erico Aumentado, 3 Bohol congressional representatives and Bohol mayors Judith Cajes of Trinidad, Eutiquio Bernales of Ubay and Claudio Bonior of host town San Miguel.

Also there were Bohol local government officials and the more than 3,500 farmer beneficiaries. (PIA) [top]
