Manila (23 October) -- Today marks another milestone for the Social Integrated Program of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP).

The Social Integration Program is a process whereby former rebels and their dependents are provided a set of interventions to facilitate their integration into mainstream society implemented pursuant to Administrative Order No. 172 promulgated on March 23, 2007 by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

OPAPP Secretary Hermogenes Esperon said a total of forty-nine (49) Former Rebels (FR's) will undergo a 3-day livelihood training as part of the socio-economic component of the program. Among the FR participants: 32 are from Sarangani, 1 from Davao Oriental, 8 from Davao del Sur, and 8 from Bukinon. The training is being held at Southern Mindanao Integrated Agricultural Center, Barangay Manmbulan, Tugbok District, Davao City.

The livelihood training which started yesterday, 19 Oct 2008 and will end on Wednesday, 22 Oct 2008, includes values formation, small scale entrepreneurships, fruit & vegetable management, goat production & management, rubber bud wood establishment & management, rubber nursery establishment & field management.

The training includes lectures and practicum for every subject and will be supervised by the DAR Region XI.

After the training, each FR will receive P50, 000 worth of goods in support to their identified livelihood project's needs and requirements. Some of these are: working animals (carabao, cow), goats, chicken, ducks, farm implements, sari-sari store goods and seedlings for farming.

These livelihood assistance is expected to enhance the economic opportunities of the FR's and is supplementary to the P20, 000 immediate Assistance each FR were given upon their surrender.

Today's event is envisioned to encourage other rebels to return to the fold of the law just as their former comrades have already done.

It is hoped that the activity will contribute to the achievement of the long-term goal of the Program --- to sustain genuine social and economic integration of former rebels and contribute to the healing divisions in the community. (LM/OPAPP) [top]
