Davao MSMEs to join 50th Manila FAME

Davao City (19 October) -- Three of Davao City's notable micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will be joining this year's 50th Manila FAME International on October 15 to 18 in Manila.

Katakus, Inc., Crystal Seas, and Gilded Expressions, all Davao City-based MSMEs who are pioneers in their fields, have been fortunate enough to be invited to join this year's select group of exhibitors in celebration of the 50th Manila FAME

Katakus Inc., a One Town One Product (OTOP) firm, represented by its Executive Director Betty More, is a non-profit organization that promotes the concept of sustainability and ecology through the use of endemic natural materials in making their products such as lamps, photo-frames, albums, scrapbooks, journals, etc. Making good use of durian and banana fibers as primary base for their products, these are then mixed with other materials to come up with highly imaginative household accents and souvenir items.

"We have had little time to prepare but are nonetheless looking forward on this, our first participation to the Manila FAME We hope to promote the uniqueness of our products, as well as their being eco-friendly, having been processed in a way which lessens their carbon footprint," Ms. More explained.

Ms. Carmaela Alcantara, part of the budding mother-daughter enterprise that is Crystal Seas Handwoven and Handcrafted Products better known as Crystal Seas, explains that their participation to the Manila FAME "is more of an industry exposure, to promote our company as well as strengthen our product lines and make them competitive. We want to tap into the "Buy Filipino" consciousness, as we see the local market is very much open to our products".

Crystal Seas, also an One Town One Product (OTOP) enterprise, is a producer of high-end bags, shawls, jewelry and other fashion and home accessories through the use of handlooms, beads and other indigenous materials. Its line of products celebrate Mindanao's handloom weaving artistry such as the t'nalak, as well as the use of pandan as primary raw materials for its now-famous bags. These are then mixed with shells, leather, satin, snakeskin, suede, buffalo horn, pearls, swarovski and other beads, to form eclectic designs and accents.

The Gilded Expressions of Ms. Ann Pamintuan is a design-oriented Davao-based export company that carries metal furniture, home accessories and jewelry. It is known for its massive and highly abstract metal designs that are turned into home and office furnishings. The products have likewise been shown in other international shows throughout the world. (DTI) [top]
