Broadcaster killed by NPA in Albay
Quezon City (22 January) -- Jose Loreno, ANAD Party List Officer and a member of the broadcast Media in Albay, Bicol was murdered by the New People"s Army (NPA).
The Santos Binamera Command-Bagong Hukbong Bayan of the New People's Army issued a statement to media in Albay admitting the assassination of Jose Loreno on Thursday evening.
Greg Banares, spokesman of the CPP-NPA in Bicol said that the movement salvaged Loreno for treachery to the movement and active membership to Kilusan kontra-Komunismo (KKK) an anti-communist organization in Albay.
The Kilusan Kontra Kumunismo (KKK) is a pro-democracy movement fighting against the communist insurgents organized in 1994 by a known anti-communist movement leader, lawyer and physician Ricardo Nepomuceno of Oas Albay.
Jose Loreno, also known as "Dayunyur Joe" in the broadcast community, a native of Guinobatan town, and a former rebel returnee turned broadcast talent/reporter, and a member of the "Kilusan Kontra Komunismo" (KKK).
Chief Inspector Jose Capinpin, town police chief said the incident took place at Barangay Maroroy, Daraga, Albay at about 7:00PM Thursday, when three suspects, two of them women, visited the victim at his residence, and while in the process of conversing, the male companion with a .45 hand gun fired at the victim in close range killing him instantly.
Loreno as a radio reporter joined the communist movement in the 80"s and surrendered to government authorities in 1990. As a rebel returnee he volunteered to help the police and military to negotiate for the surrender of NPA rebels interested to return to the fold of the law.
Loreno also joined the mainstream media in the province as a broadcast reporter in various local radio stations such as DZGB, DZRC, DWRL and DWBS, and later on was a radio block time commentator.
Dr. Nepomuceno and his two military escorts were killed last April 5, 2004 in an Ambuscade staged by communist rebels in Oas, Albay. (PIA) [top]
