PIA Press Release

7.5% growth to benefit farmers, says PGMA

Barangay Aulo, Palayan City, Nueva Ecija (September 3) --President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo today said the farmers will be one of the main beneficiaries of the highest annual pace in 20 years.

"It is expected that the economic blessings could be felt in the form of irrigation infrastructure and farm to market roads projects," the President told the participants of the just-concluded "Pulong Bayan here in Aulo Irrigation Project site.

Likewise, the North Luzon Agricultural Quadrangle headed by Secretary Arthur Yap, a member of the top-level discussants explained that processing capability and investment opportunities accelerated since the creation of Super Regions.

"More funds will go to agricultural concerns because provinces like Nueva Ecija, still considered as the number one rice producing province in the Philipines, basically feed the country," the President added.

Corollarily, the country's second-quarter GDP performance, an outstanding 7.5% growth rate, outshone neighbors such as Thailand, Malaysia and even HongKong, among others. It was an achievement considered by many as "incredible or unbelievable" until the official figures were released.

With the delegates of thousands of farmers who gained from the massive infrastructure development, the President is pointing out the strides in the economy. "Our economic plans succeeded," she was quoted as saying.

Purposively, the 320-M peso Aulo Irrigation Project is, according to UPRIIS Operations Manager Antonio Nangel, part of the action plan to cope with the dry spell and increase the productive capability of cultivated lands.Nangel said that the Aulo Dam is by far the most beautiful locally initiated irrigation project hereabouts.

Joining the President in a gathering of national, local leaders and ordinary people were Governor Aurelio Matias Umali, Vice Governor Edward Joson, Congresswoman Cherry Umali, Congressman Rody Antonino, Congressman Joseph Violago, Congressman Edno Joson, PNP Chief General Oscar Calderon,7ID Commanding General BGeneral Juanito Gomez, Usec Joe Capadocia, PA Relly Fajardo, Provincial Board Members, Bureau Directors, Administrators, LGU officials, media representatives, farmer-beneficiaries, agricultural sector representatives and local marginalized groups.
