Solon employs livelihood to bolster peace efforts

Baguio City (7 July) -- Kalinga Lone District Representative Congressman Manuel Agyao sees the theme Abante Tabuk, the City of Life fitting on the maiden celebration of the city anniversary saying that this is because "the life sustaining staple food abounds the city" that gained its title as the rice granary of the region.

However, he said efforts towards progress is "best attained under a climate of peace" stating that "with instability and uncertainty characterizing our place, we can not make headway because economic progress cannot be achieved if our efforts are negated by criminal disturbances."

"One impetus towards the attainment of peace is to make everyone busy," says underscoring that with a livelihood to tend people will "veer from doing undesirable things."

Seeing the logic of this, focus is given to making livelihood programs more competitive to generate more income that would inspire recipients to exert more effort in their work, the solon said in his speech during the Tabuk City 1st Founding Anniversary celebration

This endeavor he disclosed has started with the approval of several livelihood programs like the establishment of a loom weaving center at the old KSDA compound to centralize the weaving industry in the province aiming to promote and enhance the production of Kalinga weavers.

Blacksmiths of Barangay Dilag are also awaiting the release of fund assistance from the office of the Congressman aiming to boost said venture in the area so with the Basi Making Industry of Barangay Bantay of Tabuk City.

These he said are just only a few programs to further production in the province through livelihood assistance as he is considering providing assistance to other ventures like the mushroom, wine and vinegar making industries.

"These are only a few of a number of livelihood projects that we shall be undertaking to make everyone busy," he said citing the City's maxim "awan lugar ti sadut ditoy Tabuk" (idle people has no place in Tabuk").

Complimenting the peace programs of the local government unit, the Office of the Congressman upon the assumption of the new congressman has organized the Peace Brigade to man the highways entering the province thwarting the occurrence of highway robberies along the area.

"Our volunteers in the Peace Brigade has averted through diplomatic means the occurrence of this dastardly acts boosting the confidence of investors who wished to do business in the city," he said.

On his development efforts, with Tabuk City being the show window of the province, the solon disclosed that Tabuk did not only get its fair share but was given a lion's share for having apportioned more than 40% from the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) and special fund for its various infrastructure projects.

Said major infrastructure support include the concreting of the main canals of Bulanao and Dagupan Centro, road rehabilitation, construction of farm to market roads, water systems, communal irrigation systems and multi-purpose drying pavements. (ggd/PIA-Kalinga) [top]
