Good Samaritans needed for Heart Fund
Davao City (5 December) -- Within a year after its founding, the Dr. Gerry Cunanan Mindanao Heart Fund (DGMHF) is in need of kindhearted individuals willing to help it in its mission of helping indigent heart patients.
According to Ricardo Justol-DGMHF treasurer, they have been writing numerous government offices and non-government organizations in which almost all gave their share with the maximum amount of ten thousand pesos.
However he the amount is still lacking as the fund needs about a million pesos to become a full-pledged foundation in accordance with the rules of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
According to Dr. Mark Maruya, board of trustees DGMHF, all they could do presently is to bankroll two pediatric and adult 2D echo diagnostic tests twice a month which normally costs from P1,000 to P1,100.
Becoming a foundation would entitle it to access numerous overseas grants and assistance. That could help the indigent heart patients. Maruya said that a patient for valve replacement in the Mindanao Heart Center would need at least P200,000.
As of this year, they have gotten about P200,000 from donations of which P800,000 is still needed to reach the P1 million mark in order for the fund to be eligible for foundation status.
For the first year, the fund was able to undertake fun raising activities like Walk for a Cause I,II and III, Dinner for a cause and the selling of shirts, bags and mugs, some of the funds were shared to its partners particularly the Mindanao Thalassemia Foundation Inc. part of the profits were also donated to victims of typhoon Ondoy.
To those who are willing to share to the Heart Fund they may reach the office of the DGMHF located at the Davao Medical Center and look for Katrina Arenas R.N. (PIA XI/RG Alama) [top]
