PIA Press Release

Abra PDCC to conduct water search and rescue exercises

by Maritess Beņas

Bangued, Abra (7 July) -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo had called on the National Disaster Coordinating Council to be alert all the time during these disastrous months to be able to respond immediately to affected individuals and communities to thwart the ill-effects of calamities and to prevent more losses to lives and properties. But, this could only be made possible through early public warnings that must be communicated to everyone.

Without the aid of the Smart and Globe Telecommunications support, however, the Abra Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) expressed uncertainties if they could respond as fast and perform as effective as it should.

Despite the threat, however, the council during its meeting held at the Provincial capitol Social Hall on July 3 came up with a series of activities in the province in observance of this year's disaster preparedness month.

First on the list is the conduct of the water search and rescue(WASAR) exercises by the provincial rescue team headed by Mr. Dominador Pudol and with the assistance and supervision of the Office of Civil Defense.

On July 18, the Department of Health will lead the PDCC members and the community people in a lifestyle walk to be followed by HATAW in the Bangued town Plaza, afterwhich the usual OPLAN Kapaligiran Linisin Natin (OPLAN KaLiNa) shall be undertaken by cleaning the creeks and waterways within the Bangued town proper. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Public Works and Highways and the Provincial Engineer's Office will serve as lead agencies.

The third activity will be the evacuation drill on July 24 at the Provincial capitol with the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Philippine National Red cross as lead agencies. The PDCC members will serve as participants and observers during the drill.

The month-long activity will culminate July 31 with a Poster-Making Contest to be spearheaded by Department of Education, Philippine Information Agency and the Provincial Treasurer's Office to sustain the awareness campaign.

Relative to this, people are advised to call the following HOTLINE numbers for immediate assistance in case of emergency: (074) 752-7484 (Provincial Social Welfare & Development Office); 752-8118 - (Governor's Office); 752-8281 (BFP); and 752-5639 (Abra PNP Command). (PIA-Abra) [top]
