Feature: Women are champions on nutirion

by Jemin B. Guillermo

Roxas City (22 March) -- Nutrition officer in Capiz urges mothers to help in the campaign for nutrition.

Nutritionist Ma. Divina Bigcas of the Provincial Health Office of Capiz said that women, particularly mothers, are champions especially on the issues of nutrition.

"In the home, mothers are usually the planners, budget officers at the same time nutrition officers," she said.

Bigcas stressed that women play an important role in the campaign against malnutrition, particularly among children.

In a gathering of parents, women, teachers, barangay officials and barangay health workers in five barangays, Bigcas urges the mothers and women to take the first step in addressing malnutrition in their respective households and communities.

Given all the needed information and education on nutrition with a positive behavior, Bigcas believed that the problem will totally be eliminated.

According to her, the first step to stamp out malnutrition is the practice of exclusive breastfeeding to their infants for the first 6 months and introduce complementary feeding through infant and young child feeding (IYCF) thereafter.

She also encouraged barangay residents to put up a vegetable garden in their respective households and plant fruit-bearing trees to address hunger and malnutrition.

Bigcas congratulated the women for their commitment to the success of the nutrition program in the barangays.

The nutrition education campaign was also part of the activities in line with this year's Women's Month Celebration with a theme "Babae, Tagumpay ka ng Bayan." (PIA) [top]
