MILF vows smooth polls, no troops in controlled areas
Manila (21 April) -- A senior leader of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on Sunday said they made an arrangement with government negotiators for the smooth conduct of upcoming elections in their controlled areas in Mindanao.
Mohagher Iqbal, MILF's chief peace negotiator, said there would be no need for soldiers to conduct clearing operations next week because their fighters will not enter polling areas during the conduct of elections.
The military earlier told MILF leaders to vacate 14 villages in 14 towns in Maguindanao where they have forces to prevent untoward events ahead of the holding of national election.
Iqbal said troops commanders should clear with their superiors if they will deploy soldiers on the ground.
The government will deploy over 6,000 soldiers and police to ensure peaceful elections in Maguindanao and in this city.
The rebel leader said even in previous holding of election in Mindanao their forces are not entering polling centers. (PIA-Bohol) [top]
