Workers take limelight as RP celebrates Labor Day
Tacloban City (May 1) -- "Many times a day I realize how much my own life is built upon the labors of my fellowmen, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received."
Thus, said Albert Einstein, a German-born American physicist who developed the special and general theories of relativity, many years ago and he couldn't have been more right.
The same should be the thought of every Filipino as workers all throughout the country once again take the limelight in the celebration of Labor Day today.
The first day of May has been declared as Labor Day, a regular holiday, to enable the whole nation to mark and to honor with fitting celebration the contribution of workers to national development.
This year's Labor Day celebration revolves around the theme " Manggagawang Pilipino: Kaagapay sa Pagbabago," (Pinoy Workers: Partners for Change), is an acknowledgement of the important role and contributions of the Filipino workers in achieving change that will pave the way towards progress and development for the country.
Perhaps the best way to pay tribute to the Filipino workers, is making the workers feel that a truly Filipino sentiment recognizes the dignity of labor and the fact that honor lies in honest toil.
In the country, various Jobs and Livelihood Fairs, commemorative programs, are being conducted, all to pay tribute to the Filipino workers.
Although no wage hike increase for the private workers will be announced today, the concerned Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Boards, on orders of President Arroyo, are meeting even on Labor Day in order to ensure that the workers in the private sector will be given the needed wage hike the soonest time possible.
For the Filipino workers who realize that respect and dignity are worth far greater than monetary gains, the accolades and tributes afforded to them and the sincere concern for their welfare are enough for them to feel proud of their honest toil. (PIA 8) [top]
