Banana chips seen as ideal snacks for school children
By Gemma Tabao
Tacloban City (27 October) -- Cognizant to the health benefits derived from the consumption of banana chips, the Department of Education (DepEd) encourages all schools to include sweetened banana chips among the choices of nutrient-rich food products sold in the school canteens.
This is the essence of the DepEd Memorandum No. 156 issued by its Undersecretary Fe Hidalgo, as a result of the recommendation coming from the National Nutrition Council.
The memorandum which likewise urges to promote the consumption of said banana chips during class discussions on nutrition, is among the DepEd’s interventions in addressing the malnutrition program of the country, as most school children do not have the economic and social access to sufficient and nutritious food preferences.
Meanwhile, a resolution has also been drafted by the Nutrition Action Officers of the country to further adopt doable actions that would improve the nutrition program management at the local levels.
The resolution was made to give nutrition programs and projects full priority in the local government units, thereby attaining food adequacy and good nutrition for all Filipinos, especially the underprivileged ones. (PIA 8) [top]
