DA celebrates farmers and fisherfolks' month

Koronadal, South Cotabato (15 June) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) in region 12 conducted a technology demonstrations and good cultural on crops, livestock and fisheries recently.

DA-12 Regional Executive Director Abusama M. Alid said this year's month-long celebration, which revolves around the theme, "Pagkaing Ligtas at Sapat, Abot Kaya ng Lahat," kicked off on May 15, with the Agri-Aqua Fair held at the DA office grounds in Koronadal City that features the different agricultural commodities grouped under the banner programs of the department, namely the crops, fisheries, livestock and support services sectors.

He added that the celebration is conducted annually in honor of farmers and fisherfolks who have contributed greatly to the development of the agri-fishery sector in Central Mindanao. Also the festival underscores the important role of farmers and in achieving the government's 10-point development agenda.

Dir Alid led the cutting of ribbon together with other DA employees and officials from government line agencies during the opening ceremonies.

Among the major goals under the 10-point agenda that concern agriculture include the government's drive to attain food sufficiency, include high growth in the rural sector, expand farmlands by two million hectares for agribusiness, create 10 million jobs in sic years, and reduce poverty incidence from 34 percent to 17 percent.

More seminars and lectures on livestock, fisheries and research and development are slated for free and are open to all interested farmers and fisherfolks until the agricultural practices on various high value commercial crops including disease and pest management.

Technology on organic rice farming, rubber production, corn husk flowers, bags and slippers, crispy corn processing and technical sessions on poultry and swine production, meat and fish processing, and flower management also demonstrated during the festivities. (eapasaol/da-rafid 12/PIA 12) [top]
