Benit Ferry Terminal work is on

By Bong Pedalino

BRGY. BENIT, San Ricardo, Southern Leyte (17 October) -- The long-awaited ferry terminal project located in this far-away barangay facing the pacific ocean in the southernmost portion of the province, in Panaon island, has finally arrived.

According to Marcelo Indic, Division Manager of the Philippine Port Authority (PPA) Port Management Office based in Tacloban City, the undertaking was under the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH), otherwise known as the super-regions program as outlined by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo during her State of the nation address (SONA) last year.

In a long distance telephone interview today, October 17, Indic told PIA the total cost, which was taken from the PPA's corporate funds, amounted to P 75,399,487.75, adding that actual work on the project began last month, September, 2007, for a duration of 360 calendar days.

But Indic could not specify the starting date "since their was still no report as of now," referring to periodic reporting required by their office from the Contractor, whose identity he could not yet ascertain as well from the piles of paper he appeared flipping while on the phone.

What was certain was that the Contractor was from Cebu, Indic said.

The project was under the PPA Central Office and the Contractor was required to submit a monthly report every 25th of the month, copy-furnished PMO-Tacloban Office, Indic added.

The scope of work included the construction of one unit roll-on, roll-off (RORO) ramp, a reinforced concrete pier 12 meters by 24 meters wide/length, rehabilitation and expansion of a back-up facility containing an area of 2,366 square meters, and construction of a terminal building with a floor area of 464 square meters, Indic revealed.

Barangay Benit, which is situated three kilometers away from San Ricardo town proper to the east, has been the traditional landing port for sea-faring crafts in the vicinity and neighboring areas owing to its favorable harbor.

The existing ferry terminal at Liloan will remain operational even when the new one at Benit becomes functional, it was learned. (PIA-Southern Leyte) [top]
