Cagayan de Oro City (7 November) -- About 4,000 scholarship slots are to be awarded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to qualified high school graduating students who wish to take up college courses in science, technology, and engineering.

The DOST undergraduate science scholarship program has two components: Program A, known as R.A. 7687, is designed for poor but bright students whose family annual gross income is less than 156,000 pesos. On the other hand, those who have higher family income may apply under Program B (Merit). Applicants under the Merit category are required to pay a non-refundable test fee of 200 pesos.

Qualified to apply for both scholarship programs are high school graduating students who belong to the upper five percent (5%) of the graduating class; must be natural-born Filipino citizen; must be a resident of the municipality/district for the last four years; of good moral character; of good health; and must have no pending application for resident/immigrant status in any foreign country.

Selection of DOST scholars is through a competitive examination which will be held on 13 January 2008.

Successful examinees will enjoy the following benefits: free tuition and other school fees; allowance for prescribed textbooks and essential school supplies; outright grant for prescribed military science/PE uniform (first year only); free transportation for one economy-class round-trip fare between the scholar's permanent residence and place of study; group health and accident insurance; and a monthly allowance of 3,000 pesos.

Deadline for submission of application is on November 16, 2007.
