by Rachelle M. Nessia

Dumaguete City (April 21) -- Negros Oriental State University President Dr. Henry A. Sojor is set to speak in a six-day international event at Bali International Convention Center in Indonesia slated April 25 to 30, 2010.

Organizers of this year's World Geothermal Congress in Bali has invited Dr. Sojor to speak in the event with the theme "Geothermal: The Energy to Change the World", according to NORSU Information Officer Joy Perez.

Perez in a statement said that Dr. Sojor is scheduled to present a paper together with former NORSU alumnus and a member of the state university's pioneering batch of Geothermal Engineering graduates, Engr. Julmar Shaun Toralde.

The paper entitled "Ahead of Its Time: 15 Years of the Undergraduate Geothermal Engineering Degree of Negros Oriental State University, Philippines," will be presented on April 28 (Wednesday).

NORSU started offering its geothermal engineering course in school year 1994-1995.

Perez said that NORSU became the first higher-education institution in the Philippines to offer the course and became a pioneer in undergraduate geothermal engineering curriculum development through the leadership of Dr. Sojor.

Toralde now works with the Weatherford International, Ltd, a leading geothermal company with its main office in Switzerland and is a recipient of the 2009 NORSU Outstanding Alumni Award.

Sojor said the 2010 World Geothermal Congress serves as a forum for exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences not only on technical and financing aspects, but also in policy and global politics of the energy sector.

Some 2,500 participants from 80 countries consisting of academicians, researchers, experts and policy makers as well as those leading geothermal industry players are expected to attend the international gathering.

The event is the fourth after the ones in Italy, 1995; Japan, 2000; and Turkey, 2005.

Nine other papers from the Philippines will be presented. (PIA/RMN) [top]
