Arroyo off to strengthen ties with China

Quezon City (26 October) -- PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be flying to China on Friday to strengthen ties, especially security and economic, with a country she hopes will be a “good big brother and good neighbor” of the Philippines.

While there, Arroyo will also be meeting with fellow leaders of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members who, like her, will also attend the 15th anniversary of the ASEAN-China partnership.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said Arroyo will not only represent the Philippines but will also speak as chair of ASEAN.

"Our world will be safer if China is a good big brother at good neighbor in our region. That is why this trip to China is important," she said in an interview over radio dzRH.

The trip will take Arroyo and her delegation to Xiamen, Jin Jiang, Nanchang, Guilin, Nanning.

She will be meeting with prominent Chinese business leaders in Xiamen, the Filipino community in Fujian province, and university students in Nanchang.

In Nanning, she is expected to hold bilateral talks with Premiere Wen Jiabao and meet with other ASEAN heads of state. She will also grace the opening ceremony of the 3rd China-ASEAN Expo.

Arroyo will also grace the signing ceremony of the "framework agreement on further enhancing friendly exchanges and cooperation" between Jiangxi province and Bohol.

From Nanning, Arroyo is expected to fly to Hong Kong for a two-day stay during which she will meet with a business group followed by a day for rest and recreation with her family. (PIA) [top]
