Regional Chinese Business Chamber picks RP as venue of 2009 convention

Quezon City (28 November) -- Looking to even brighter times for the Philippine economy in the years ahead, the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC) in Hong Kong, one of the biggest business groups in the Asia-Pacific region, will hold its 10th World Chinese Entrepreneur Convention (WCEC) in 2009 either in Cebu or Manila.

Ian Fok Chun Wan, president of CGCC in Hong Kong, informed President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during a courtesy call in Malacanang this morning that CGCC has chosen the Philippines as the venue of the association's convention in 2009.

He said, however, that the CGCC board has yet to decide on the exact date of the convention, and whether it would be held in Manila or Cebu.

The CGCC Founders Board is composed of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) and the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (TCCC).

Fok, who is also the chairman of the 10th WCEC secretariat, called on the President at Malacanang's Music Room to personally convey to her the WCEC's decision, and enlist her support for the regional business convention.

He was accompanied to Malacanang by Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano, Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila and Federation of the Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) president Francis Chua.

Also with Fok during his call on the President were his wife Chan Kai Jojo, Doris Pan, head of the external department of the CGCC, and Amanda Cheung, chief secretary of the CGCC.

The Chief Executive assured Fok that her administration would support the WCEC convention and that she was looking forward to the event.

The WCEC was first conceptualized and organized by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) in August 1991 to provide a forum for overseas Chinese entrepreneurs to enhance economic cooperation and promote better understanding among overseas Chinese entrepreneurs and business communities worldwide.

Being apolitical in nature, the WCEC focuses on economic and cultural issues pertaining to Chinese entrepreneurship.

Through the WCEC, Chinese entrepreneurs have been a driving force in the economic development and integration of the Asia-Pacific region. (PIA) [top]
