Legazpi City (6 February) -- Four personnel of the Philippine Army 565th Engineering Battalion and two civilians were wounded in an ambush last Friday afternoon along the national road between Barangays Gatbo and Buenavista in Bacon District in Sorsogon province, the Philippine Army said.
Lt. Col. Claudio Yucot, commanding officer of the Philippine Army 9th Infantry Battalion operating in the first district of Sorsogon, identified the wounded personnel as Corporal Orlando Nuyles, PFCs Orly Gigo, Ruel Ete, Joel Dagta and civilians Edgardo Gujo and Gabriel Hermosa, who were rushed to Sorsogon Provincial Hospital immediately after the ambush.
"The Isuzu Elf truck they were riding on was a total wreck," said Yocot who supervised the rescue effort for the soldiers who suffered various wounds in the arm, back and the thighs from the ambuscade.
Yucot said about ten NPA rebels belonging to Guerilla Front 79 who were positioned on a higher ground beside the rice paddies on both sides of the road peppered the vehicle with automatic gunfire from M14 and M16 rifles after exploding four improvised claymore mines on the left side of the road.
The improvised claymore mines has an effective killing radius of 50 meters. The mines and explosives contain nails and sawed metal parts.
Yucot said the members of the Philippine Army Engineering Battalion were on the way to their headquarters at Barangay Del Rosario in Bacon District after delivering construction materials for the repair of a school building under the Kalayaan sa Kaunlaran School Building Project (K4K) in far-flung Barangay Buenavista when they were waylaid.
Yucot also said that the NPA rebels under Guerilla Front 79 operating in Sorsogon wanted to show they are not a spent force ready to collapse anytime due to relentless combat operation, effective barangay level intelligence and special operation teams (SOT). (PIA) [top]
