TABUK CITY, Kalinga (8 February) -- Two elementary graduates from the province successfully passed the second screening for secondary scholarship at the Philippine Science High School (PSHS).

DOST Provincial Director Alfredo Rigonan said the qualifiers are Victor Bravo of Laya Elementary School and Paul Ivan Ceralde of St. Tonis College, Inc. Rigonan said 86 Grade 6 students who belong to the upper 10% of the graduating class with special aptitude in science from different elementary schools in the province participated during the 1st screening. "A scholastic aptitude test consisting of tests in verbal, abstract reasoning and mathematics was administered during the 1st screening while science and math aptitude test was given to applicants who qualified for the 2nd screening," he said.

He also disclosed that four Kalinga graduates from Bayombong PSHS last year are now enrolled at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Two of them passed the scholarship examination for college together with six others from non-science high schools. Two students are also expected to graduate this year at the Bayombong PSHS also.

Meanwhile, Rigonan announced the availability of scholarships for Master's and Doctorate degrees in priority S&T areas through the implementation of the Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program.

The program aims to help improve the country's global competitiveness and capability to innovate through alternative approaches on MRD in S&T; and to accelerate the production of high level human resources needed for S&T activities particularly in the area of R&D.

This is open to new students, on-going graduate students who have already taken certain MS or PhD units in priority S&T fields, and Thesis dissertation grant support for R&D priority areas of DOST.

Scholars studying outside their home province are given free tuition and other school fees, a monthly stipend of P10,000.00 a month for MS and P12,000.00 for PhD, book allowance of P7,500 a year, transportation of P10,000.00 a year, group insurance of P500 a year and thesis dissertation of P30,000.00 for MS and P60,000.00 for PhD.
