DepEd starts rehab of Aklan schools

Kalibo, Aklan (17 July) -- The Department of Education (DepEd) has started giving out funds to various schools here destroyed by Typhoon Frank.

According to DepEd-Aklan, schools which were initially given funds for repair of their damaged buildings were the Aklan National High School for Arts and Trades (ANHSAT)- P2,240,000.00; for repair and rehabilitation of its 7 classrooms; Numancia Integrated School-P1,282,000.00; Laguinbanua Elementary School - P1,255,000.00; Mobo Elementary School - P762,000.00; Ortega Integrated School, P463,000.00 and Regional Science High School - P367,000.00.

The fund forwarded by the DepEd will be used for immediate repair of the schools, This week, classes in most public elementary schools resumed after mud, fallen trees and other debris were removed in these schools in Kalibo.

Meanwhile, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is on track on her SONA target as far as the DepEd is concerned.

Based on her SONA target to create more than 50,000 teaching positions, 53,026 teaching positions were created from 2002-2007. Students were given financial subsidies: 475,560 for Education Service Contracting and 88,346 fro education vouchers from 2004-2007.

The government also provided P1 billion to TESDA for its PGMA Training for Work Scholarship Program in 2007 with 96,809 graduates, and released P1 billion for scholarship and students loans program.

For PGMA's target to invest P3 billion in science and engineering research and development technology, including scholarships for masters and doctoral degrees programs in engineering in seven universities, a total of P1,005 billion was allocated for MS and PhD scholars under the Engineering Research and Development for Technology Program.
