PGMA signs NSU bill into law

By Rodrigo S. Victoria

Naval, Biliran (14 October) -- At long last, the Naval Institute of Technology (NIT) is now a university when President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (PGMA) signed at around 1:30 in the afternoon today, October 14, 2009, in Malacaņang Palace, Republic Act 9718 entitled "An Act Converting the Naval Institute of Technology (NIT) in the Municipality of Naval, Province of Biliran into a State University to be known as the Naval State University (NSU), Integrating therewith the Biliran National Agricultural College in the Municipality of Biliran, and Appropriating Funds Therefore".

In a mobile phone interview with Representative Glenn A. Chong today, he happily reported that the conversion of NIT into a state university was finally realized when President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo affixed her signature on the new RA 9718.

"This day is a significant date for all Biliranons because what we have been longing for so long a time, the conversion of the only institution of higher learning in the province of Biliran into a state university is finally realized." Rep. Chong said.

He added that he will allocate funds amounting to P100-M for the development of NSU, the newly-created university in Region 8.

Meanwhile, Dr. Edita S. Genson, President of NIT, in a separate mobile phone interview gladly revealed that their sacrifices and hard work were rewarded when NIT finally became Naval State University today.

Dr. Genson joined with the five Congressmen who were co-authors of the conversion of NIT into a university together with Rep. Chong, who is the principal author of HB 04414 and the Commissioner on Higher Education (CHED) as they witnessed the President affixed her signature on the new law today in Malacanang.
