Negros Occ. mulls cloud seeding as El Niņo strikes
Negros Occ. (15 January) -- The Province of Negros Occ. is mulling for the conduct of a cloud seeding after PAGASA reported that higher than normal temperature prevails over the province because of El Niņo phenomenon.
Sugar planters too raised the issue of sugarcane loses if the condition persist as 60 percent of the country's sugar come from Negros Occ. and from the other parts of Western Visayas, a local paper here said.
PAG-ASA, in its El Niņo advisory said the province of Aklan is now in drought while 20 other provinces across the country are at risks.
Governor Isidro Zayco said he will consult with the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, OPA, Chief Engr. Igmedio Tabianan to look into the proposal of sugarmen.
During the third quarter of last year, OPA has already proposed the conduct of cloud seeding should the situation warrant the intervention after PAG-ASA announced the occurrence of the phenomenon.
Along with this move is the proposed provision of seeds, pumps and fast growing crops to farmers who will directly feel the impact of the drought.
OPA Program Planning and Development section OIC- Samson Garzon told PIA the existence of El Niņo should strengthen the resolve of the citizens and the government to preserve the forest cover and reforest watershed areas, which is the source of irrigation water.
Eventually, he said, the province may go into bio-fuel from Jatropha and if things work out positively, planting of the tree may be incorporated into the office' reforestation program. (PIA-LOL) [top]
