ASEAN future cooperation in crisis situations given focus

    San Fernando City, La Union (31 July) -- Member countries of the Association of SouthEast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are closing ranks to extend consular assistance to their nationals caught in conflict or crisis situations in third countries.
    Foreign Ministers from the 10-member ASEAN - Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam - drafted a Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on extending consular assistance by ASEAN missions in third countries. (+)

Commentary: UN Security Council support sought for ASEAN "nuclear free zone"

    San Fernando City, La Union (30 July) -- As the ASEAN member-states are busy discussing several issues and hammering out plans to strengthen bilateral trade, counterterrorism cooperation and forging beneficial partnerships, one major concern to be tackled by them would be the nuclear weapons ban, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo said.
    Sec. Romulo disclosed that there will be ten Southeast Asian nations who will take charge in drafting a plan to ensure that a treaty will be made with the cooperation of the world's nuclear powers. (+)

Commentary: ASEAN leaders ink documents to stamp out poverty and terrorism

    San Fernando City, La Union (17 January) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, in urging fellow leaders "to bring ASEAN to the grassroots to "usher in payback time" for the ordinary people said that the successful conclusion of the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) summit would now focus its attention of the many problems of poverty and terrorism.
    Bidding farewell to the delegates of the regional grouping in East Asia, President Arroyo said that the caring and sharing of this formidable regional alliance will come in varied dimensions hinged on a "closely integrated, dynamic and vibrant regional economy." (+)

    San Fernando City, La Union (15 January) -- Faced with mounting security threats, the 12th ASEAN Summit is going on smoothly at the Cebu International Convention Center with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo leading the meeting of the 10-member ASEAN leaders.
    The meeting is an opportunity for the world to witness the best of a sharing and caring community carving out a united response in addressing problems of poverty, terrorism, environmental degradation, trade and energy-marking a vibrant market and a new phase of trade and development across borders.
