DepEd bares guidelines in hiring, deployment of preschool teachers

LAGAWE, Ifugao, March 19 (PIA) - As the Department of Education continues to pursue its key basic education programs even as the groundwork for the eventual roll out of the enhanced curriculum under the K + 12 program is underway, DepED Ifugao announced today the guidelines on hiring and deployment of preschool teachers.

In a radio interview in the daily ‘PIA Hour’, Education supervisor 1 Edel Grace Kimayong said DepEd Order No.4, series of 2007, provides for additional guidelines in the selection and deployment of new plantilla positions for preschool teachers.

The applicant must have obtained any of the following degrees - BS in preschool education or BEED major in Preschool education or BEED major in teaching early grades or BEED with 21 units in early childhood education, BSE with 21 units in Early Childhood Education and BS Psychology with at least 18 units in preschool education

An applicant must be a Licensure Examination for Teacher (LET) eligible; teaching experience in pre-school shall be given priority and a resident of the municipality/barangay where pre-school classes are organized.

Kimayong added that new plantilla positions for preschool classes are to be organized. “New preschool classes shall be organized in any of the following municipalities: 4th, 5th, or 6th class municipalities with a large population of five-year-old children or municipalities where there are day care centers but without PTCA-funded preschools.

A preschool class can only be organized with a minimum class size of 25 five-year-old children in the school where there is an available classroom. No child/children from existing preschool classes shall be pulled out to complete the minimum class size.

The qualified preschool teacher shall handle only two classes per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon for a period of three hours per class. In a school where there is only one preschool class, she will teach in a nearby school to complete the required six-hour teaching load.

Since this is a preschool plantilla item, Kimayong said that no teacher-appointee should be transferred to any other grade level. However, like a regular teacher, he can be promoted to higher teacher positions for as long as he is qualified. *(PIA-CAR/ Ifugao)
