Lagawe declares Feb. 14 as Love Mother Earth Day

by Mhars B. Lihgawon

LAGAWE, Ifugao Jan. 3 (PIA) -- The Sangguniang Bayan here passed an ordinance declaring every February 14 as “Love Mother Earth Day” of the municipality.

This is in support to the greening program of the local government unit (LGU) with the primary objective of planting at least a thousand trees in the different parts of the public or private lots to preserve the watershed areas of the town.

According to Councilor Wilson Bumanghat who authored the ordinance, it is the policy of the LGU to take an active role in the greening of the environment and to harmonize and synchronize efforts of agencies towards this purpose.

“Most of the agencies situated in the municipality have their own clean and green programs, so there’s a need to harmonize all these efforts to protect and preserve the environment that would address the effect of climate change,” Bumanghat said.

Bumanghat explained that every February 14, a community tree planting would be conducted in areas determined by the municipal government to be participated by schools, government and non-government offices operating in the municipality.

“All employees and students shall be individually required to plant a number of seedlings as part of the one-day greening activity to be spearheaded by the municipal government of Lagawe,” the councilor reiterated.

To ensure the survival of seedlings to be planted, Bumanghat stressed that barangay officials where the plantations are located will be mandated to maintain and protect the seedlings.

These barangays will also be given incentives for their initiatives in maintaining and protecting planting areas in accordance to the policies established by the steering committee. (JDP/MBL-PIA CAR,Ifugao)
