Kalinga Social Welfare Office opens sewing course

by Larry Lopez

TABUK, Kalinga, Jan. 4(PIA) -- Aiming to provide livelihood skills to disadvantaged sectors, the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) opened its sewing craft course for the first quarter of the year.

Espirita Gamatero of the social welfare office announced that slots are now opened for the January-March training and encouraged interested applicants to register.

The three-month sewing course offers tailoring or dressmaking to enrollees, depending on what skills they want to learn, Gamatero said.

For the project, PSWDO had tied up with other government agencies like the provincial government which provided financial assistance for materials and honorarium of the trainor.

Those who trained under this program acquired modern sewing skills with the electric and manual sewing machines from Japan that have updated sewing systems.

DSWD offers the free training to develop income generating activities for both women and men as source of additional income for their families.

Since the program started in the province, graduates have put-up their dressmaking and tailoring shops and are now making it their prime source of income.

After the training, PSWDO refers the group to other government agencies for entrepreneurial capability so they could borrow loan assistance as capital to start to start their own business. (JDP/LL-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
