AFP vows to work side by side with LGUs

by Peter A. Balocnit

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Jan. 4(PIA) -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) vowed to support the development agenda of local government units (LGUs) and provide security for project implementers under threat and on projects being disturbed by lawless elements.

Col. Paul Atal, Deputy Commanding Officer of the 501st Infantry Brigade, said their support will not be limited on government projects but also to multi-national companies with on-going investment in their area of responsibility (AOR) and others wanting to establish business ventures in the province.

“Even if the job on internal security is turned-over to LGUs, the Filipino soldier is always on their side through the AFP’s bayanihan program,” he said adding “we will not leave the LGUs but rather live with them in implementing their projects and assisting village folks acquire livelihood skills and learn to read and write.”

Atal assured local chief executives and barangay chairmen that military personnel are always available for any assistance provided they are properly coordinated with any detachment or communicated to their camps.

“They are also teachers for the out-of-school youths,” he said referring to their Amy Literacy System for illiterate folks and OSYs.

During the implementation of the SONA road project involving the concreting of the Tabuk-Bontoc road, the security services of the 21st and 77th Infantry Battalion were requested to guard contractors and their equipments against individuals and groups obstructing the implementation of said project to demand road right-of-way damages.

The 501st Brigade has been active in joint medical outreach missions with national and local health units, Office of the Congressman, and on private-sponsored relief operations. (JDP/PAB-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
