ALS-Ifugao tackles concerns of mobile teachers

by Dan B. Codamon

LAGAWE, Ifugao, Jan. 7 (PIA) -- The Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the Division of Ifugao recently held a meeting with all the ALS implementers to assess their performance and tackle problems they encounter in the field for appropriate action by concerned authorities.

Provincial ALS Coordinator Arsenio Yongoyong said ALS-Ifugao for this year has 12 mobile teachers and 13 District ALS Coordinators who are all on a renewed designation basis. They implement the two programs of ALS under the Department of Education which are the Basic Literacy Program (BLP) and the Accreditation and Equivalency Program (A & E).

Yongoyong said they also implement some pilot or special programs like the Balik Paaralan Para sa Out of School Adults (BPOSA) in Kiangan District, Mobile Library in Hungduan, Radio Based Instruction in Lagawe and the e-skwela in Alfonso Lista.

However, he said that there are some issues and problems that have to be acted upon so that they can fully and effectively implement their programs.

These include the lack of mobile teachers in the districts of Aguinaldo, Banaue and Alfonso Lista, absenteeism of learners during the working season, lack of interest among the adults and other learners in attending learning sessions and no community learning centers for learning session and to place instructional materials.

Yongoyong also shared that learners have different time schedule that it is very difficult to gather them in one learning session. Sometimes mobile teachers risk having night sessions since this is the only available time of some learners as they have to work during the day.

Among the recommendations to address these concerns are for all districts to have a designated ALS Coordinator; additional mobile teacher items be given by the national government to have at least one per district; learning centers be constructed like day care centers and the early release of the P5,000.00 for teaching aid of mobile teachers and ALS District Coordinators.(JDP/DBC-PIA CAR,Ifugao)
