DA releases P10- M farm mechanization support to Kalinga

by Larry Lopez

TABUK, Kalinga, Jan. 9(PIA) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA)recently released P10 million farm mechanization support to the province under the 2012 Agri-Pinoy rice production priority program.

Joe Casibang, rice program coordinator of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG), said the fresh mechanization assistance would boost the rice industry for hybrid, inbred and heirloom rice.

DA is pouring additional support to the mechanization component of Agri-Pinoy in pursuit of the country’s goal of achieving food sufficiency, Casibang explained.

The money was distributed to various farmers associations in all eight towns of the province for pre and post harvest machineries.

Included in the list of pre-harvest farm machines to be acquired from the fund are six units hand tractors at P130,000 each to be given to farmers associations of Pinukpuk, Rizal and Tanudan with one unit each and Tabuk with three units.

As support to production of heirloom rice, the program is giving one unit 4-wheel tractor costing P879,000 to Agbannawag Organic Unoy Rice Farmers Association.

Still under pre-harvest machines, eight units of direct seeding rice drums costing P7,000 each, equipped with a mechanized pattern for direct seeding are distributed to farmer-beneficiaries throughout the province.

Casibang said bigger portion of the money is allotted for post-harvest support with the aim of reducing post-harvest losses and enhancing quality.

Under this, the program is distributing one unit village type multi-pass rice mill that provides higher milling recovery of 70% from the regular 65%. With this type of rice mill, Casibang said, rice farmers can enhance production at an average of up to 6,000 bags from a rice area of 300 hectares.

As support to upland rice farming, the program is giving out one unit customized rice mill designed for milling ‘Unoy’ red rice, a traditional Kalinga rice variety.

Farmers also get 13 units of rice cutter-harvester with organized system in gathering cut palay stems as part of labor cost reduction.

For mechanized rice threshers, three units costing P130,000 each are distributed to farmer beneficiaries in Rizal with one unit and Tabuk, two units.

Another 15 units of pedal thresher intended to small land holdings are provided to upland farmers in Tanudan, Lubuagan, Pasil and Tinglayan.

Under the drying facility, one unit mechanized flatbed dryer costing P670,000 is given to Aluminit Farmers Association in Barangay Santor, Rizal and additional four units of multi-purpose drying pavement are given to Pinukpuk, one and Tabuk, three.

Kalinga is getting more production assistance this year from the national government through DA it being a rice top-producing province and major supplier of the buffer to other provinces in the Cordillera region. (JDP/LL-PIA CAR,Kalinga)
