Kiangan schools implement solid waste management plans

by Dan B. Codamon

KIANGAN, Ifugao, Jan. 13(PIA)-- The four schools here who attended the School-Based Orientation and Workshop on Solid Waste Management given by the Municipal Solid Waste Management Program Council (MSWMPC) began implementing their action plans for 2012.

MSWMPC Coordinator Patrick Polpog reported that the involved schools namely Kiangan Central School (KCS), Kiangan National High School (KNHS), Saint Joseph High School (SJHS) and Ifugao Academy (IA), are now doing the activities they scheduled for the month of January.

He said that KCS through its Principal Geraldine Gawe had already called a forum with the pupils and teachers to explain what is solid waste management and its importance to present day situation like its impact to climate change.

The KNHS Student Body Officers also called a meeting with the faculty members and students to inform them of their proposed solid waste management project for the school while the SJHS student leaders held a training workshop on solid waste management for the different officers of each school year level.

IA, on the other hand, through the students who participated in the SWMP orientation re-echoed to their fellow students and teachers what they learned on solid waste management.

These activities are just part of the different activities and strategies that these schools will do for the whole year in their respective institution to help accomplish the objectives of the MSWMP in the whole community.

Polpog said that the youth and schools are being tapped because they are the hope of the fatherland and to give substance to this expectation they must be trained and equipped with the right knowledge, skills and attitude in handling issues and concerns about solid waste management.

Since solid waste management is one of Kiangan’s prevailing concerns, the students and the youth must fully understand the issue by giving them a detailed orientation and hands on experience about the scientific, technical and practical know-hows of solid waste management which they can use as a way of life, he further said.

Polpog added that he will continue to monitor the activities of the schools in the coming months based on their work plans so that they will be able to accomplish them and have a rich and worthwhile experience to inspire others.(JDP/DBC-PIA CAR,Ifugao)
