PNoy pushes for bioenergy advancement

by Alpha Selene Balasta

MANILA, Jan. 12 (PIA) -- President Benigno Aquino III expressed confidence that developing the bioenergy sector will help the country attain energy security and will eventually protect the economy “from swings in the global commodities market.”

During the 1st Philippine International BioEnergy Conference (PIBEC) Thursday at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila Hotel, President Aquino said the country is currently producing 390 million liters of coco-biodiesel which is 60 percent higher than the local demand at two-percent blend.

“[This] provides us with an opportunity to take advantage of the growing worldwide demand for biodiesel, and revitalize our ailing coconut industry,” the President said.

With the advancement in bioenergy, the sector’s power contribution is expected to increase from 39 megawatts in 2010 to more than 300 megawatts by 2015. In support, the National Renewable Energy Program also aims to triple the country's renewable energy-based capacity by 2030.

Aside from attaining energy security, the development of bioenergy is also expected to create additional 89,000 jobs for Filipinos and to benefit 577,000 farm families.

“These of course have a multiplier effect, because citizens with sources of income become empowered consumers, who can stimulate local economies and create even more jobs,” President Aquino said.

He also lauded the Department of Energy for its 2011 Alternative Fuels Programs. The said program promotes the production and use of bioethanol and biodiesel.

The President said he expects a more impressive performance in the energy sector for 2012.

The use of biofuel as an alternative source of energy will help in reduction of carbon emissions and eventually mitigate the impact of climate change.

Finally, the President called on the stakeholders to work together to "make the year brighter for many Filipinos, and for many people around the world."

"With your help, we can have more houses capable of switching on lights to welcome each New Year. With more emphasis on Renewable Energy resources, we can even make our own small contribution to addressing the massive problem that is climate change," he addressed the stakeholders.

The 1st PIBEC is a convention of local and international bioenergy industry players who engage in bioenergy feedstock production, processing, logistical support requirements. (RDA/ASB/PIA-GHQ)
