Our Lady of Fatima tours Pangasinan

by April M. Montes

DAGUPAN CITY, Jan. 12 (PIA) –- The Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan, headed by Archbishop Socrates Villegas, welcomed the international pilgrim virgin statue of Our Lady of Fatima last January 8 at 4:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist here.

The revered statue arrived last January 4 at the St. Jude National Shrine in Manila to make 18 stops in Central and Northern Luzon this whole month of January as part of a worldwide pilgrimage.

The Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan is one of the said places which the Our Lady of Fatima will visit this month. Three of its parishes were included in her journey’s itinerary, St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in Dagupan City, St. Fabian, Pope and Martyr Parish in San Fabian, and the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Urdaneta City.

According to Fr. Melvin Castro, founder of the Confraternity of Mary Mediatrix of All Grace, the purpose of the visit is to bring the message of Fatima, the importance of praying for the protection of the unborn and world peace to the Filipinos.

To note, the Church is currently fighting the passage of the controversial reproductive health (RH) bill, which seeks to promote the use of contraceptives.

Parishioners greeted the pilgrim virgin statue in front of the cathedral waiving white handkerchiefs symbolizing acknowledgment for the coming of Our Lady of Fatima. A welcome mass was conducted and presided by Archbishop Socrates Villegas. It was followed by an overnight vigil.

In the morning of January 9, a mass was again celebrated. Subsequently, the image was transferred at 8:00 AM to St. Fabian, Pope and Martyr Parish in San Fabian town. The statue was met at the foot of the Cayanga Bridge by the devotees and parishioners. A procession followed going to the parish church. Then a mass was held at 9:30 AM.

On January 10-11, Our Lady of Fatima will also stay at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Urdaneta City. (ANL/AMM-PIA-Pangasinan with reports from CBCP News)
