Enrollment for grade 1, 1st yr students on Jan. 28

by Miriam P. Aquino

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Jan. 17 (PIA1) -- The nationwide enrollment of incoming Grade 1 pupils and first year high school students for the coming school year will start on January 28.

This will allow the Department of Education to place the annual budget/allocation for various school facilities needed by students for school year 2012-2013.

Macob said the practice of holding early enrollment started three years ago but was institutionalized only last year, in preparation for DepEd's K to 12 program, which requires kindergarten education among school children.

To make the system more effective, kindergarten teachers were tasked to cull the birth certificates of five-year old pupils from the local civil registry office. These will be used once they enter grade 1 or elementary level.

All five-year old children should be enrolled with the DepEd while those four-year old and below should be entered at the Day care Centers of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Macob added.

Aside from the regular teachers who will be conducting the early enrollment, DepEd assured that kindergarten volunteer teachers will assist in this endeavor.

These volunteers, she said, are paid P6,000 per month and each teacher volunteer is required to have two classes to handle. Local government units through the local school board also provide their share for the salaries.

Macob proudly said that the kindergarten teachers have undergone massive training on subjects including children’s literature, child psychology, production of instructional materials and manipulative materials.

"We are planning to conduct regional training not just for teachers but also for principals and district supervisors so they would know how and what to observe during their monitoring activities," Macob said.

Public elementary and high schools are now prepared for the activity, Macob added. (ANL/MPA-PIA 1 La Union)
