by Ben P. Pacris

VIGAN CITY, Jan. 18 (PIA) -- To boost the economy and generate more jobs for the Ilocanos, the provincial government of Ilocos Sur, in coordination with the Department of Trade and industry (DTI), will promote the "Partuat ken Tawid” (Crafts and Heritage) Agri-Trade Fair in Metro Manila and other mega cities in the Philippines and abroad.

“We are not only selling our own products to local and foreign tourists but also promoting Ilocos Sur, especially the Heritage City, as a tourist destination because of its uniqueness in history,” Gov. Chavit Singson said.

The trade fair will showcase Ilocano products including One Town, One Product (OTOP) abel Iluko (weaving industry) of Caoayan; burnay (jar) of Vigan; muebles (furnitures) of San Vicente; longganisa and bagnet of Vigan; cornik and special bibingka of Bantay; calamansi juice of Tagudin; bawang (garlic) of Sinait; basi (Ilocano Red Wine) of San Ildefonso; Suka Iluko of Sta. Maria; Bugnay Wine of San Emilio and other local products in the upland towns.

The provincial government has launched series of trade fair and exhibits in big malls like SM and Robinson’s in Metro Manila including the Ilocos Sur’s Partuat ken Tawid at Mega Walk in Ortigas, Pasig City last December.

An Abel Fashion Show with Saniata Models depicting Ilocano customs and traditions was held at Mega Walk, sponsored by the Ilocos Sur Designer’s Association during the past Christmas season.

The governor urged his province-mates to engage in the preservation and promotion of the OTOP and One Barangay, One Product including traditional industries considered as “Partuat and Tawid.” The provincial government and other government agencies will provide the necessary assistance.

Singosn has also asked the DTI and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to help in improving the commercial labels and quality standards of these local products, aside from strengthening its promotion and marketing strategies.

Citing the Basi industry of Gongogong in San IIdefonso town, Singson said there is a need to preserve and promote this local beverage not only as a mere product but because of its historical value or trademark which will create opportunities for employment in this small but historical town.

The famous and bloody “Basi Revolt” occurred at Bantaoay River in Gongogong during the Spanish Regime.
