New Year injuries drop in Bulacan

by Jose Mari M, Garcia

CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan, Jan 3 (PIA) –- The number of injuries incited by the New Year’s revelry in the province decreased from 145 last year to 127 this year, marking a 30 percent drop off.

Only a few of the victims were admitted in hospitals and all were reported well except for a six-year old boy from Nueva Ecija who accompanied his father in buying fireworks from Bocaue town on December 26 who was hurt by firecracker.

Provincial administrator Jim Valerio announced yesterday morning that the number of firecracker-related injuries in Bulacan continued to drop in consecutive years.

“Last December 2009 to January 2010, there were 224 victims of firecrackers; last December 2010 to January 2011, the figure dropped to 145 or 35 percent. This December 28 until today, we recorded a 30 percent decrease,” Valerio said.

According to the report of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), 37 people were hurt by Piccolo, a small firecracker which was banned because it was the main source of injury to children and teenagers.

Other firecrackers that caused casualties include Whistle Bomb, Pla Pla, Whistle Bomb, Five Star, Lusis, and Fountain.

Among the victims was Ronnie de Pablo of Barangay San Jose, Plaridel who was brought to the Bulacan Medical Center after a Piccolo exploded in his right hand.

De Pablo said he did not expect that a firecracker as small as the Piccolo can induce damage.

“The number of cases decreased this year because of the intensified campaign of the provincial government. We advised the municipalities to encourage their people not to use or not to buy firecrackers,” said Raul Agustin, senior operations officer of PDRRMC.

Meanwhile, Bulacan police director Senior Supt. Fernando Mendez Jr. said the New Year’s celebration in the province was generally peaceful. It was also reported that no policeman fired a gun during the revelry.

The Oplan: Ingat Paputok 2011 of the PDRRMC is pursuant to the call of Governor Wilhelmino Alvarado on the strict implementation of Republic Act No. 7183 which regulates the sale and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnics. (WLB/JMG-PIA 3)
