Korean firm tops semicon exports volume in Clark in November 2011

by Eric V. Jimenez

CLARK FREEPORT, Pampanga, January 8 (PIA) — A new Korean semi-conductor firm is now Clark Freeport Zone’s biggest exporter, a report from Clark Development Corporation said.

A report by the Enterprise Operations and Management Department to Clark Development Corporation President Felipe Antonio B. Remollo showed that as of November 2011, the export volume of Phoenix Semiconductor Philippines Corporation (PSPC) amounted to more than $98.5 million.

The said report also indicated that Nanox Philippines placed only second, in terms of exporting volume with more than $62.8 million for the same month in 2011. This was the first time that the firm was dislodged as lead performer.

Since 2000 up to October 2011, the Japanese firm Nanox was consistently the top exporter at Clark Freeport Zone.

Nanox customizes display format and electro-optic properties which are used in a wide range of fields from home appliances, audio, healthcare equipment, medical equipment, meter (for electricity, gas, water), to automotive products. It also manufactures backlight, switch, touch panels, among others.

The company's first production started on March 2000, concentrating on the production of Liquid Crystal Display and Chip-On-Glass to meet the growing demands in the world market. The firm also produces convenient indication device used in office automation equipment (facsimiles, copiers, printers), communication equipment (telephones, mobile phones, pagers), and wide range of measuring instruments.

PSPC was established in Clark Philippines in January 2010 by STS Semiconductor, which is Korea’s leading provider of semiconductor packaging.

It provides turn-key-solutions- a wide range of products with DDR3, NAND, Flash Cards and also offers a full range of memory modules for PCs, notebooks, among others. NAND Flash is a special form of Flash memory. Flash memory is a memory technology that keeps data even when the power supply is cut off; this is known as a non-volatile memory type.

Total exports of Clark firms already exceeded the $1.888 billion level by the end of November 2011. With exports figures of the peak month of December still to be factored in, Clark exports have already exceeded last year’s $1.453 billion export figure. This signals not only the recovery of Clark’s top exporting sectors in electronics, tires, garments, and other industrial goods, but also indicates the increasing level of optimism in the global economy.

This export figure may even be understated since it is exclusive of the value of services rendered by the number of BPOs operating in Clark.

While Nanox is still Clark’s top exporter at $693 million, PSPC now placed second with an overall export performance of $ 404 million; Yokohama, L&T Int’l Group Philippines, Inc., and SMK Electronics (Phils.) Corp. completes the list of Clark’s top five exporters. (WLB/EVJ CDC)
