BFAR warns anew against red tide

by Joelyn G. Baluyut

CITY OF SAN FERNADO, Pampanga, Jan. 10 (PIA) -– Two provinces in Central Luzon are still positive for paralytic shellfish poison, more commonly known as red tide, that is beyond the regulatory limit, according to an advisory issued by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Region 3.

Based on the latest laboratory results of BFAR and the Local Government Units (LGUs) concerned, the Masinloc Bay in Zambales, and Bataan coastal waters in the municipalities of Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Pilar, Balanga, Orani, Abucay and Samal are found to be still affected by the toxin.

Thus, all types of shellfish and Acetes sp or “alamang” gathered from the above mentioned areas are not safe for human consumption, the BFAR said.

Fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs, however, are safe to eat provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.

Meanwhile, the coastal waters of Bulacan in Manila Bay continue to be free from toxic red tides. (WLB/JGB- PIA 3)
