Binay: Remember lessons, scars from history

CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan, Jan. 25 (PIA) -- After missing a couple of big cultural revelries in the province, Vice President Jejomar Binay finally made it to the 113th anniversary of the First Philippine Republic at Barasoain Church here.

Clad in a barong tagalog, Binay said the Filipinos need to remember the lessons and scars left by history preceding and following the institution of the First Philippine Republic, the first constitutional republic in Asia, on January 23, 1899.

“Before, we were the only country in Asia which had a constitution, until many others followed so we always need to carry the lessons from history and the scars of the past,” said Binay in Filipino.

He also compared the historic Barasoain Church to an island filled with colorful and exciting parts of the olden times. It could be recalled that the church is home to the Malolos Congress which ratified the constitution of the First Philippine Republic, installing General Emilio Aguinaldo as president.

Binay was previously invited to the opening of Singkaban Fiesta on Sept. 8, 2011 and in the anniversary of Malolos Congress on Sept. 15.

Meanwhile, Governor Wilhelmino Alvarado clarified that though the nation simultaneously celebrated the Chinese New Year on Jan. 23, celebration of the Malolos Republic’s anniversary was also important as it was when Filipinos founded a free country.

“Through the power of Executive Order No. 322, President Noynoy Aquino declared January 23 as a non-working holiday. In Bulacan, January 23 was also seen to be given importance because of the freedom we enjoy today,” said Alvarado.

Ma. Serena I. Diokno, head of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, explained the important role the said day played on revolutionary efforts.

“We will uphold the Filipino masses and we will fight for the freedom to decide for oneself and for the welfare of many. Through this, we could give justice to the perseverance of our ancestral heroes,” said Diokno.

Cesar Virata, grandson of Aguinaldo and chair of Cavite Historical Society, also graced the annual commemoration together with Vice Governor Daniel Fernando, members of Sangguniang Panlalawigan, representatives of each Bulacan district and municipal mayors. (CLJD/JMG-PIA 3)
