E-trike needs public & private teamwork to succeed

CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan, Jan. 25 (PIA) -- A future with electric tricycles, in order to become possible, needs a “massive shift” in Filipino mentality plus government aid, according to an environmental society.

Martin Francisco, head of the Sagip Sierra Madre Environmental Society Inc., said the success of the electric tricycle or E-trike of the Department of Energy (DOE) will depend on Filipinos changing their outlook on environment conservation.

“We have to make a massive shift and get climate change-conscious. The public thinks that they could not contribute hugely for the environment. It is not like that,” said Francisco over a phone interview.

He added that the government, particularly the Climate Change Commission, should partner with private companies and reach out to small vehicle groups like tricycle and jeepney organizations.

Stable financial scheme on the project and assistance to the makers are also needed to ensure that the E-trike will materialize, Francisco said.

With this, the DOE launched the nationwide E-trike Design Contest which will grant P200,000 to three winners who could develop the best three-wheeled electric vehicle by Feb. 17.

DOE said the contest aims to “generate 2D and 3D computer-aided drawings of the best aesthetic and functional design for the future Philippine E-trike look.”

Themed as “Bright now! Do Right. Be Bright. Go E-trike!” the nationwide competition is open to all Filipino citizens of 18 years old and above, whether individual or group residing in the country. The participants must fill-up the official registration form which can be downloaded at DOE website or at the Philippine Information Agency website, www.pia.gov.ph.

Francisco said he personally would like to have an e-trike or e-jeep that his group could use in its projects to mountains in Central Luzon. However, he stressed that given the project is an “anti-pollution” effort, the government must be reminded that the electricity to be used should not be generated by coal plants.

“It is ironic if we will use electricity in vehicles to lessen global warming but the electricity will be coming from coal plants,” said Francisco.

For more details about the contest, contact DOE at 840-2214 local 209. (CLJD/JMG/PIA-3)
