Regional creative writing workshop kicks off

ANGELES CITY, Pampanga, Jan. 27 (PIA) -- The Regional Creative Writing Workshop dubbed “12th Pamiyabe,” has started yesterday, Jan.26 where 15 high school and college students from the different provinces of Central Luzon were selected to be part of the event.

The students joined the said workshop to hone their craft in poetry, fiction and drama using English, Filipino, or Kapampangan language beginning yesterday until Saturday at the Tarlac State University International Hostel in Tarlac City.

The event will feature Conference Piece Critiquing, Literary Interaction, Writer’s Clinic and Writers’ Tour.

Participating students are from Holy Angel University (HAU), Tarlac State University (TSU), Pangasinan State University and Guagua National Colleges.

Invited panelists for this year’s workshop include Nerisa del Carmen Guevara who is the author of “Reaching Destinations: Poems and the Search for Home,” which is a book and a CD of songs.

Guevara’s album was the only one to receive special citation for Best Secular Album in the 27th Catholic Mass Media Awards.

One of the panelists is Romulo Baquiran Jr., a poet and professor of Creative Writing at the University of the Philippines (UP) Department of Filipino.

Ralph Galan joins the panel as well. Galan teaches literature, humanities and writing subjects at the Faculty of Arts and Letters at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) He also writes book reviews for the Lifestyle Section of the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) from time to time.

They will be joined by Eros Atalia who is the famous author of "Peksman" and "Ligo Na U, Lapit Na Me," which is now a motion picture.

Gelacio Guillermo is also part of the panel. Guillermo, also known as “Kris Montanez” is a poet and is said to be one of the revolutionary writers in the country.

Jerry Gracio, a multi-awarded poet and scriptwriter joins the panelists. Among his works are "Byahe: Mga Impresyon at Tala (Travel: Impressions and notes)" He had his own first collection of poetry, called the "Apokripos."

Finally, Erlita Mendoza is also one of the panelists. She is a researcher at the Center for Intercultural Studies of the UST and the author of "A Cofradia of Two: Oral History on the Family Life and Lay Religiosity of Juan D. Nepomuceno and Teresa G. Nepomuceno of Angeles, Pampanga."

The workshop is hosted by The Angelite, the official university publication of HAU in this city, together with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

“Pamiyabe” which is unity or bonding in English language, is an annual writing workshop that aims to introduce the word through reading books, communing with fellow writers, and writing continuously. It also aims to introduce the Kapampangan culture to non-Kapampangans. (WLB/JGB/PIA-3)
