Bacolod holds community-based disaster training

by Lorenzo O. Lambatin Jr.

NEGROS OCC., January 12 (PIA6) -- More than 50 employees from various Bacolod City government offices attended a training on Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management which was held from January 9 to 11.

In an interview, Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson said the activity complements the series of trainings the city had already conducted as part of its disaster preparedness program.

“This training is not in reaction to the typhoon Sendong tragedy. Long before that event, we have had trainings already in the city,” Sayson siad.

He said the activity is important because 40 out of 61 barangays of Bacolod are considered high risk disaster areas, mostly of flooding.

The training aims to formalize the structure of the City and Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council based on the newly approved Disaster Risk Management Law.

Participants are expected to come up with hazards, capacities and vulnerabilities assessment for Bacolod City and high risk barangays.

Risk and Resources Map for the city and high risk barangays was also be part of the output along with drawing up plans and programs for the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.

The activity was held in collaboration with Smart Communication’s program ‘Kabalikat sa Kaligtasan’ and focused on enhancing the over-all disaster preparedness of the city in dealing with calamities particularly flood, Nn Navarro of Smart told PIA.

Navarro said the training was conducted by the Corporate Network for Disaster Response, a program adopted by an alliance of companies in the country. (JCM/LOLPIA6)
