Sec. Luistro visits Cagayan De Oro

by Joemar R. Sinatao

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, January 4 -- ‘I thank God you are alive.’

Education Secretary Brother Armin A. Luistro, FSC told the 880 homeless and displaced Department of Education (DepEd) teachers and personnel of Cagayan de Oro City due to tropical storm ‘Sendong’ during an Orientation Conference.

Luistro said that he is very proud of the teachers who despite being also flood victims, still have hearts and hands to help the evacuees in their respective schools.

“I thank you because your hearts are wider and bigger than your pockets,” said Sec. Luistro.

He shared that when he first saw the devastated parts of both cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan and the faces of the victims, his total person was really touched

He also encouraged the teachers to do the three important things on the first day of classes.

“Account the pupils/students in your classes; listen to their stories and sympathize with them; and process and let them understand why bad things happen to good people,” Luistro said.

He also shared the story of a teacher in Iligan city who was able to survive the devastating flood by holding on to the electric post for seven shouting ‘tabang’ (help) in the darkness.

After hours of unheard shouts for help, the teacher heard a voice nearby, “Is that you Ma’am? I am your student before. I know you Ma’am because of your voice.”

As teachers, the good deeds that you have done will never be forgotten. Even in your darkest moments, your voice will still be heard even in the total darkness,” Luistro concluded. (DepEd/PIA-10)
