'Adopt-a-reef project’ to be implemented in 4 Quezon towns

by Lito M. Giron

LUCENA CITY, Quezon, Jan. 6 (PIA) -- Starting this month, the provincial government of Quezon will implement ‘adopt-a-reef’ project in the municipalities of Plaridel, Infanta, Guinyangan and San Francisco.

Provincial agriculturist Roberto Gajo said the purpose of the project is to install artificial fish habitat and breeding ground to increase production of marine products in the municipal waters of said towns.

An estimated of 100 small fishermen will benefit from the project and expected to improve their daily earnings from fishing, Gajo added.

Meanwhile, the provincial agriculture office is encouraging all fishermen in the province not to engage in any illegal form of fishing activity because it destroy natural reefs and fishing grounds in the provincial waters.

The ‘adopt-a-reef project’ is one of the priority programs of Gov. David Suarez under ‘Serbiyong Suarez sa Barangay.’

Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is a strong partner of small farmers, fishers and ruralfolk in increasing their productivity and income as it partners with LGUs in providing needed rural infrastructure including livelihood opportunities and direct market linkages to organized groups of farmers and fisherfolks.

This is in accordance with its vision for a competitive, sustainable and technology-based agriculture and fishery sector, driven by productive and progressive farmers and fisherfolk, contributing to inclusive growth and poverty reduction. (JMG, PIA-Quezon)
