San Pablo’s 17th coconut festival and trade fair opens January 7

SAN PABLO CITY, Laguna, Enero 8 (PIA) -- Now on its 17th year, the 2012 coconut festival and trade fair opens January 7 with the final activities slated January 15 in time with the city’s annual fiesta celebration.

City Administrator Loreto S. Amante, festival committee chairman, said the festival features Mardi Gras or Street Dancing Contest to be participated by students and special groups donned in attire made from parts of coconut tree.

Other activities include nightly cultural presentation and musical extravaganza and beer plaza to be sponsored by various commercial corporations, as well as by the provincial government of Laguna and the city government.

Meanwhile, SM City San Pablo is closely working with the city government for the activities inside the mall. Mall Manager Gabriel Timothy Exconde said they are excited to be part of the festivities as venue for the “Munting Lakan at Mutya,” ”Lakan at Mutya” and “CocoStar.”

In line with the festivities, SM City San Pablo will present on January 10 the Coco Art fest to further showcase the revival of the main product of the city which is the coconut. The mall giant is also expected to participate in the float parade scheduled January 13.

San Pablo is dubbed as the “Coconut Queen City of the Philippines” before the outbreak of World War II, being the home of American-owned Franklin Baker Company of the Philippines. The company was the world’s biggest dessicated coconut processing plant and site for German-owned San Pablo Oil Factory, then considered as the largest coconut oil refinery in the country.

Local policy-makers decided to establish the local festival in compliance to the provision of Republic Act No. 7356. They opted to call program the Annual Coconut Festival and Trade Fair with Mardi Gras as main feature.

The First Coconut Festival and Trade Fair in 1995, coincided with the celebration of the 400th founding anniversary of the Parish of Saint Paul, the First Hermit, which is now the seat of the Diocese of San Pablo.

During the 5th Coconut Festival and Trade Fair, this tourism event was already declared “a tourist destination” under the program of the Department of Tourism (DOT and accredited or recognized by the National Historical Institue of the Philippines (NHIP).

It was learned that all the activities of the 17th Coconut Festival and Trade Fair from January 7 to 15 will be covered live by CATLink Television to be aired on Channel 8 of TELMARC Cable Television that serve the City of San Pablo and the Towns of Alaminos, Calauan, and Victoria.
