DTI advises ‘bayong’ makers in Quezon to be more competitive

by Lito M. Giron

LUCENA CITY, Quezon, Jan. 10 (PIA ) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Quezon is conducting extensive skills training under the ‘bayong’ development program for ‘bayong’ makers in Quezon Province in order to produce export-quality products.

Pablito Budoy of DTI-Quezon, said the program is designed to help local producers of ‘bayong’ in the province to become more competitive in the world market, adding that ‘bayong’ made in Quezon has a great potential for export in Asian countries as well as in the United States.

The program will create livelihood opportunities not only to women but also to men because the cultivation and harvesting of buri leaves are mostly the work of men, Budoy said.

He added that boosting the ‘bayong’ industry is the best way for local government units to help the Aquino administration in its ‘climate change’ advocacy because of using bayong instead of plastics.

The province has three ‘bayong’ producers, Sariayanas Enterprises in Sariaya town, Sampaloc Weavers Association in Sampaloc town and Gat-Uban Weavers Association in Mauban town where most of their products are distributed in Divisoria and some parts in the country.

Through this program, Budoy said, the DTI will assist and provide product development, packaging and marketing to bayong makers to help make their products more competitive and export-quality. (PIA-Quezon)
