Quezon agriculture office to implement more programs for farmers, fishermen

LUCENA CITY, Quezon, Jan. 11 (PIA) -- Quezon provincial agriculturist Roberto Gajo announced the provincial government will strengthen the organic agriculture and fish production this year in order to help small fishermen and farmers to increase harvest.

Gajo said, Quezon Governor David Suarez instructed him to develop and implement programs that could benefit and augment the living condition of families from of farming and fishing sector.

He added that among the programs to be implemented are corn and vegetable production, salt fertilization, and ‘Gulayan sa Paaralan.’

The ‘salt fertilization program’ is expected to boost coconut planting and production of coconut fruit in order to further strenghened the coconut industry in the province.

On the other hand, because of the successful ‘Gulayan sa Paaralan’ last year, the provincial agriculture office and the Department of Education (DepEd) will implement again this program as it contribute in the decrease of malnutrition among public school students.

Under the program, during school days, identified-malnourished children will be provided meals with harvested vegetables from ‘Gulayan sa Paaralan’ for six months starting on July 2012.

Gajo also said the construction of farm-to-market roads (FMR) in some municipalities are on the priority list to assure speedy delivery of farm products to the market. (JMG, PIA-Quezon)
