DENR leads global confab on Land-Ocean connection

TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite, Jan. 19 (PIA) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) together with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) organized the First Twin International Conference entitled Global Conference on Land-Ocean Connection.

The first conference with a theme entitled “Towards a Greener Coastal Economy” will be held on January 23-24, 2012 while the 3rd Inter-governmental Review (IGR-3) meeting on the implementation of the Global Programme of Action (GPA) for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities will be on January 25-27, 2012. The said events will be held at EDSA Shangri-la Hotel in Mandaluyong city.

The first conference which is the Global Conference on Land-Ocean Connections (HLOC) looks forward to assemble scientists, experts, policy-makers and non-government organizations (NGOs) to discuss current marine and coastal issues.

The group will review policy and implementation frameworks and see how solutions contribute effectively in developing resilient marine and coastal ecosystems that serve coastal and upstream communities. These solutions will be drawn up to help the international community develop more resource-efficient, lower carbon economies based on sustainable food, energy and water security and quality.

On the other hand, the second conference or the GPA has thus adopted a strategic approach from international and regional-level actions to national and local initiatives. At all levels, comprehensive, continuing and adaptive action plans aim to protect the marine environment, recognizing effects on food security, poverty alleviation, and ecosystem health, as well as the resulting economic and social benefits. This integrated, multi-sectoral approach is proving to be relevant particularly with the threat of climate change on coastal communities.

About 200 foreign delegates, including 40 environment ministers from different Asia-Pacific countries and about 300 local delegates represented by government and non-government organizations will participate in the events.

DENR CALABARZON selected personnel and other Regional staff will serve as documenter during the breakaway group discussion on the first and second day of the said conference.

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje said that the conference would allow the country “to showcase our accomplishments, efforts and successes in protecting our environment, particularly our marine and coastal resources.”
