Youth group protects environment, celebrates anniversary

by Gigi Dumallig

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Jan.4 (PIA)-- The Youth Community Service Club (YCSC) of Tabuk City recently celebrated its one year anniversary of a fruitful year of protecting the environment of this city.

Highlighting the event was the presentation of the YCSC year-long accomplishment and planning workshop for their 2012 action plan. Among the guests were Governor Jocel Baac and City Mayor Ferdinand Tubban.

In her report, YSCS president Rosalyn Lao-ang said that among their major activities include the setting up of the YCSC office at the old City Hall Bldg., establishment of a nursery, and conduct of eco-walk and tree planting in various parts of the city.

With the support of Tubban and YCSC organizer, City Councilor Antonio Bakilan, the YCSC office s was formally established in January 20, 2011. This was followed with the production of seedlings at the YSCS nursery and at the Tabuk City AGRO-farm in Barangay Balong where thousands of seedlings are now being cared for future tree planting activities.

The group had also been conducting tree planting activities in the city’s major road networks, watersheds, in the schools and barangays, and also participated in the national government’s greening program.

Eco-walks, she said, were likewise held to clean-up major streets in the city from litter particularly after festivities like the Kalinga Day Festival and the Tabuk City Anniversary.

Members of the YCSC have likewise undergone leadership seminars, trainings, and study tours on environmental protection, and have also participated in a symposium on anti-illegal drugs and crime prevention.

According to Bakilan, the organization of the YCSC was conceptualized to give the youth a voice while encouraging them to actively participate in governance especially in the implementation of youth and environmental development programs to enhance their capabilities to be productive citizens. It was also meant to inculcate in them the values to be good future leaders.(JDP/GGD-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
