Kalinga BHWs get incentive

by Gigi Dumallig

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Jan. 5 (PIA) -- Registered and accredited barangay health workers (BHWs) in the province recently received P1,000 each as incentive from the provincial government during their year-end convention.

Assistant Provincial BHW Coordinator Frances Reggie Ramirez said the BHWs were pleased with the gift from the provincial government considering that as volunteers they are only receiving an honorarium which is dependent on how much the barangay could allot.

Some she said are even only receiving P300 quarterly despite the hard work they are rendering especially for those in the upland areas where in most cases, the delivery of services require hours of walking just to reach their clients. Some BHWs in barangays with higher income are receiving P1,800 every quarter.

Being in the frontline, BHWs are very much needed in the efficient delivery of government health services especially in the far-flung areas. Considering their work conditions and significant contribution to the health sector, BHWs she said deserve the incentive.

With the theme “Hope Realized in Service with Love,” a convention of BHWs was held recently where more than 700 BHWs attended. Ramirez said the event was conducted purposely to “give the BHWs a break, get together and celebrate Christmas.”

Based on the latest list, Kalinga has 855 active BHWs but the number could still increase after the updating to be done this year.

According to Ramirez, Kalinga Gov. Jocel Baac initiated the conduct of said convention purposely to meet the BHWs and give them their incentives. The governor during the event expressed appreciation to the BHWs for rendering voluntary service to help improve the health condition of the people in the province.

Provincial DILG Director Francisco Gamatero and Health Officer Dr. Romulo Gaerlan also graced the event and gave their messages of encouragement to the BHWs to keep providing their services to ensure good health among the populace. (JDP/GGD- PIA-CAR, Kalinga)
